‘Forced labour’ in cotton report raises concerns with AAFA

The American Apparel & Footwear Association has released a statement following the publication a report that is critical of labour practices in Xinjiang province in China. The report in question is called ‘Connecting the Dots in Xinjiang: Forced Labor, Forced Assimilation, and Western Supply Chains’ and is from the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS):

AAFA said it was “deeply concerned” about the findings in the report, which suggested forced labour has become “an integral part” of re-education activity of minorities in Xinjiang. CSIS has said this forced labour is connected to the clothing supply chain and, ultimately, to consumers because Xinjiang produces more than 80% of China’s cotton.

In response, AAFA said: “Forced labour in any form is unacceptable. Our industry does not tolerate forced labour in our supply chains. Indeed, it is a top priority of our industry to ensure that all workers in our supply chains – regardless of the country or region where we operate – work under safe, ethical, and humane conditions.”
