Sri Lanka plans fabric processing park in Eastern Province

A fabric processing park is being planned for Eravur, Batticaloa, in the Eastern Province of Sri Lanka. As reported by local media, the park is hoped to cut lead times and reduce costs, thereby drawing investors from China and other countries.

According to the report, the Joint Apparel Association (JAAF) is working with the Board of Investment on establishing the industrial zone. Rehan Lakhany, chairman of Sri Lanka Apparel Exporters Association, was quoted saying they are talking with relevant authorities to allocate approximately 200 acres in Eravur for the park.

They will invite foreign textile manufacturers to set up factories within the zone, he added, including Chinese apparel makers who may wish to relocate in response to the trade war with the US.

Currently, it takes about a month for a shipment to reach Sri Lanka from China, included clearing processes. Having its own processing park will cut out that one-month lead time, said Mr Lakhany, allowing Sri Lanka to attract more business.

Mr Lakhany said that the industrial zone is expected to have centralised facilities, including a water treatment plant to recycle water, which will help to reduce set-up costs for prospective investors.
