Shoe composed of offcuts embraces efficiency challenge
The Nike Atsuma trainer, released earlier this month, reflects the brand's effort to creatively reduce material waste by increasing pattern efficiency.

Described as turning “negative space into positive (aesthetic) energy”, the shoe demonstrates how offcuts from traditional cut-and-sew footwear can become critical parts of a shoe’s construction and design.

In the case of the Atsuma, the lateral side logo is mirrored by a cutout version of the logo on the medial. At the same time, the shoe’s heel counter and eyestay “exhibit playful employment of negative space”, as does the hangtag, which is made from a cutout on the outsole.
