Bottle-collection network behind sustainable Puma collection

Global sports brand Puma has launched a sustainable sports apparel and footwear collection with the First Mile, a company that supports low-income communities in Haiti, Honduras and Taiwan.

Pieces in the collection are made from recycled yarn manufactured from plastic bottles collected by the First Mile network. With more than 4,000 people in its collection networks, the “people-focused” organisation is said to “strengthen micro-economies in Taiwan, Honduras, and Haiti by collecting plastic bottles to create sustainable jobs and reduce pollution.”

Using recovering plastic bottles as a raw material source, First Mile produced more than 300 tons of recycled yarn in 2018.

“Even though one of the key benefits of this partnership is social impact, the PUMA and First Mile program has diverted over 40 tonnes of plastic waste from landfills and oceans, just for the products made for 2020. This roughly translates into 1,980,286 plastic bottles being reused,” said Stefan Seidel, head of corporate sustainability for Puma.

Pieces from the co-branded collection include shoes, tees, shorts, bottoms and jackets, all of which is 83% to 100% sustainable yarn sourced from the network.
