Asics recycled uppers to honour Edo era Japan

The Edo Era Tribute Pack pays homage to Edo, as present-day Tokyo was then known, as it was said to have treated recycling as integral to life in 17th to 19th century Japan. “People saw everything as a valuable resource,” the company said, “from old clothes and used paper to worn-out pans and broken ceramic items and even candle wax drippings.” The graphics for the uppers combine two Edo Era lettering styles.
Uppers for the collection’s six performance running shoe models and four SportStyle styles use recycled polyester fibres made from some 300,000 PET bottles. Using these marks the first stage of the company’s move toward using 100% recycled polyester fibres in all of its uppers by 2030.
Shoe boxes for the collection use 100% recycled paper with approximately10% less material than the standard designs, and they have replaced oil-based inks with water-based ones. The sustainable shoe boxes will expand sequentially from July, 2020.
