ASICS invests in Israeli spidersilk developer

Sports brand ASICS has announced an investment in Israeli materials developer Seevix. Founded in 2014 following more than a decade of research, Seevix is a producer of man-made spidersilk. It calls its product SVX and says it has natural spidersilk’s high levels of strength and elasticity. SVX is durable, sustainable and biodegradable, the company has said.

Seevix manufactures SVX through biomimicry in a controlled fermentation-based process; it is now working on ways of creating thinner, lighter and tougher products on a commercial scale and, although much of its focus until now has been on medical devices, it will work with ASICS to develop sporting goods that use SVX.

ASICS said this move was in keeping with its plans to create “differentiated innovation”, to shift to sustainable materials, including those deriving from biotechnology and to contribute to a circular economy.
