Spain to have new recyclable textiles certification
Three organisations in Spain are to work together to develop a new certification system to show the recyclability of textiles.
AMSE (Spain’s sustainable fashion association) will work with Gremi Recuperació de Catalunya (an established recycling company in Catalonia) and Madrid-based environmental consultancy Dríade to create and set up a ‘recyclability seal’ specifically for the textile sector.
One of their aims is to establish a system that will make clear to consumers the extent to which a particular garment is recyclable or uses fabric that is already recycled.
In addition the three partners will seek to help garment manufacturers and brands design and produce clothing with a high level of recyclability. On presenting the idea, they said avoiding zips and decorative elements would help clothing companies meet this objective, as would using a single fabric.
On announcing the work on the certification system would begin, AMSE said a sustainable garment is one that respects and cares for the environment and human health, guarantees the rights and dignity of workers, is made with organic materials or materials suitable for reuse, that supports local production and craftsmanship and encourages responsible consumption and the circular economy.
The partners have committed to working together for an initial three years on the new certification programme but have said they will consider extending that.
