Pulp non-fiction: Lenzing to work with Swedish partner on recycling idea

02/06/2021

Fibre manufacturer Lenzing has signed a new co-operation agreement with Södra, a Swedish producer of wood pulp. The companies said their aim was to make “a decisive contribution to addressing the enormous textile waste challenges” that the clothing industry faces.

They will share knowledge and expertise with a view to increasing the amount of textile waste going into pulp that Södra has begun to produce from recycled materials. Their joint aim is to use 25,000 tonnes of cellulose-based textile waste per year for this project by 2025.

Södra calls the pulp it is able to make in this way OnceMore. The process combines wood cellulose with textile waste to create a pure, high-quality dissolving pulp.

It will work with Lenzing to increase ten-fold its capacity to use textile waste in the production of OnceMore in the course of 2022. Lenzing will then use OnceMore pulp as a raw material for its Tencel and Refibra fibres.
