10/06/2021

Mumbai-based maker of manmade cellulosic fibres (MMCFs) Birla Cellulose recently achieved the “stringent” level of sulphur-to-air emission norms required by the European Union (EU)’s best available techniques (BATs) guidelines for the viscose manufacturing process at its flagship Grasim cellulosic division in India’s Vilayat, Gujarat state.

The company, part of the Aditya Birla Group, said that the initiaitive is in line with its own aim to apply EU BATs across all its fibre locations by the close of 2022. Investments of around $170 million are already underway to ensure this goal is met, Birla said in a press release.

Chief operating officer, H. K. Agrawal, commented: “Adapting the best available technologies is an important milestone towards achieving global leadership in sustainable practices in the MMCF industry. We are investing in innovation to continually improve our performance.

“This is the reason that our products come with sustainability credentials that are global benchmarks.”

Following completion of the Vilayat site’s ongoing expansion, it will be the largest MMCF manufacturing site in the world, the release continued.

Birla recently told WSA that it sources 100% of its wood pulp from suppliers complying with FSC, SFI or PEFC standards.
