Puma moves to protect viscose and packaging supply chains

Vancouver-headquartered environmental not-for-profit organisation Canopy recently welcomed a partnership with sports company Puma, specifically relating to the brand’s paper, viscose, and cardboard sourcing.

The Germany-based sportswear and sports gear enterprise agreed to join Canopy’s Pack4Good and CanopyStyle initiatives.

Regarding the former, Puma will now source all its paper and cardboard packaging from recycled or certified forests.

On the latter, all the brand’s viscose must stem from “top-of-class” fibre producers, a press release said, meaning that all supply chain partners must previously have been audited and ranked highly by Canopy in its Hot Button Report

By joining hands with Canopy in this way, Puma aims to avoid the risk of purchasing viscose, paper and cardboard derived from ancient or endangered forests, the release stated, while also working towards empowering supply chains to “save forests” through alternative solutions.

Head of corporate sustainability at Puma, Stefan Seidel, commented: “Forests play a key role as carbon sinks and water reservoirs. With our new forestry policy, we will ensure that Puma is part of the solution to protect ancient and endangered forests around the world.”

Canopy’s executive director, Nicole Rycroft, added: “Transforming unsustainable supply chains is vital to keep forests standing, protect biodiversity and stabilise the world’s climate.

“Puma strives to be at the front of the pack and today they are clearly demonstrating their leadership.”
