Patagonia to work with Canopy on ‘next gen’ packaging

Outdoor brand Patagonia has become the latest brand to sign up to Canopy’s Pack4Good initiative, and will work with the environmental group on “next-gen” packaging solutions.

Paper packaging — such as delivery boxes, hang tags and shoe boxes —  is responsible for 3.1 billion trees being logged annually, many from climate-critical forests, according to the Canadian company, which campaigns to eliminate viscose sourced from endangered forests from clothing supply chains.

Jennifer Patrick, packaging and branding director at Patagonia, said: “As part of our goal to build the best product and constantly improve everything we do, we are taking steps to review and develop new, more-responsible packaging materials in partnership with Canopy.”

Patagonia was among the first brands to source exclusively from producers rated as “green shirt” in Canopy’s annual Hot Button Report and has been using 100% recycled content for all its packaging and catalogues.

The next phase of Patagonia’s sustainability journey will involve collaboration with Canopy to develop and scale up Next Gen packaging solutions.

'Next gen' alternatives include materials that are commonly wasted or burned, like cereal straws, hemp stalks, jute or tomato stems.

Patagonia is one of 550 fashion brands and retailers, collectively representing more than $1 trillion in market value, with CanopyStyle policies in place, and 444 brands worth $249 billion committed to Pack4Good.
