Top Canopy ranking is cause for celebration at Birla Cellulose
Fibre manufacturer Birla Cellulose is celebrating its number-one ranking in Canopy’s Hot Button Report for 2023. Birla Cellulose is the pulp and fibre business of the Aditya Birla Group.
Each year, Canadian environmental group Canopy, which campaigns to eliminate viscose sourced from endangered forests from apparel supply chains, publishes its 2020 ranking of fibre producers in its Hot Button report.
It ranks viscose suppliers by assessing their willingness to welcome third-party audits, contribute to conservation projects, invest in new products and adopt good sourcing policies with transparency, traceability and sustainability at the forefront. It also takes into account their chemical use and emissions.
It awards ‘green shirt’ status to companies that come out of its assessment well and ‘dark green shirt’ to those that receive the highest rating. Birla Cellulose has received ‘dark green shirt’ status for four years in a row now.
Canopy’s executive director, Nicole Rycroft, said: “Hearty congratulations to Aditya Birla for securing the top spot in Canopy’s 2023 Hot Button Report. We commend its hard work to remove ancient and endangered forests from the manmade cellulosic fibre supply chain and are encouraged by its consistent progress in bringing next-generation fibres to market at scale.”
For his part, the business director of Birla Cellulose, HK Agarwal, said the company was committed to improving wood-sourcing practices, forest conservation and “transparent operations across the entire value chain”.
