JD Sports makes acquisition in Spain
Retail group JD Sports has announced the acquisition of a controlling stake in Deporvillage, an online retailer based in Catalonia. It will make the acquisition through its Spanish subsidiary, Iberian Sports Retail Group.
Deporvillage focuses on the sale of specialist sports equipment, principally for cycling, running and outdoor. It launched in Spain in 2010 but has since expanded internationally and has country-specific websites in Italy, France, Portugal, Germany and the UK. In 2020, Deporvillage generated revenues of €117.8 million and delivered a profit before tax of €7.7 million.
JD Sports will pay €140 million for an 80% share of the business, deferring €40 million, with payment of that sum contingent on the performance of the business in what remains of 2021.
Executive chairman, Peter Cowgill, described Deporvillage as having a strong consumer-centric approach and “significant potential for further international development”.
