An explosion and fire at an industrial park in Leverkusen, Germany, has killed two people and injured at least 31, five of them seriously.

"Several" other people are missing, according to a report by news agency Reuters.

Chemicals makers including Covestro, Evonik and Bayer have operations at the Chempark site (pictured).

Chempark chief Lars Friedrich said: "My thoughts are with the injured and with loved ones. We are still searching for the missing people, but hopes of finding them alive are fading."

Park operator Currenta said it was not clear what had caused the explosion. The fire took three hours to extinguish.
