New chemical recycling initiative for polyester

Oerlikon Barmag is a manufacturer of machinery and factories for the production of synthetic fibres and packaging materials. A division of Swiss group Oerlikon, it can rely on the fibre and polymer expertise of the group’s Oerlikon Manmade Fibers Solutions division. Specialty chemicals company Evonik, based in Essen, intends to leverage its advanced catalytic processes in the partnership.
The chemical recycling project the two companies are working on is long-haul one that is expected to be finalised in the coming decade. They intend to create a PET recycling technology that will seamlessly integrate into current PET production processes.
“This partnership marks a great step forward in the chemical recycling of PET. Our new catalytic processes and chemical technologies will complement current mechanical recycling methods enabling high recycled PET content from heavily contaminated and mixed PET waste that would otherwise be incinerated or landfilled,” commented Max Preisenberger, Head of Catalysts for Evonik.
