German biotech companies Evonik, a fermentation specialist, and biomaterial maker AMSilk have announced a new stage in their ongoing partnership. Building on a first manufacturing agreement in 2023, they have now commissioned a manufacturing line to be installed at Evonik’s biotech production hub in Slovakia.

Evonik’s facility, which runs on renewable energy, will be producing several tonnes of silk proteins for AMSilk.

AMSilk transforms the silk protein powder produced by Evonik into high-performance yarns that offer a vegan alternative to natural protein fibres used in apparel, including silk, wool and cashmere.

The company exhibited a series of knit and woven fabric developments at Premiere Vision Paris last week. Sportstextiles was told that production had now reached double-digit tonnes, thanks to a second production site in France and yarn manufacturing conducted by a partner in the Czech Republic.

Earlier this month, the Neuried, Germany based company announced that it had secured €52 million from existing investors ATHOS (AT Newtec), MIG Capital and Novo Holdings. The new funds are a combination of €30 million in equity, and €22 million in convertible bonds.
