Biotech start-up Solena moves to new facility
London-based start-up Solena Materials is making progress towards its goal to launch a new protein-based fibre in 2027. The company is moving to a new advanced manufacturing and innovation hub set up by Imperial College London in North Acton, aka WestTech London.

Solena will be operating a pilot facility made possible by a £5.1 million seed funding round that will enable it to produce up to 2 tonnes of fibre yearly, enough to supply its existing partners in the athleisure and luxury sectors.

The start-up said it uses AI to design protein-based fibres for luxury and performance fabrics. It believes its solution offers a biodegradable, low carbon alternative “with the potential for localised production near demand centres—helping apparel companies build more responsible and resilient supply chains”.

Solena was founded in 2022 by Dr James MacDonald, CEO, alongside Prof. Paul Freemont and Prof. Milo Shaffer. Investors include Sir David Harding, SynBioVen, and Insempra.
