Debut, a biotech company based in San Diego, has announced having successfully produced a carmine red dye. The breakthrough was possible thanks to a new class of enzymes, which, the company said, are responsible for a key step in the technology and help reduce the cost of the biomanufacturing process.

The company further said that its carminic acid is more than 95% pure versus the industry average of 30% or lower. The purity of carminic acid derived from the cochineal beetle is said to be around 10%. Its biomanufactured carmine is also said to be devoid of a specific protein found in cochineal beetle-derived carmine that is known to cause skin irritation. Additionally, bio-carmine boasts antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, the company said.

“There have been several colourants that have been used as replacements to cochineal-derived carmine, but nothing beats the shade, power, stability and vibrancy of carmine in lipstick. Debut’s bio-carmine is the exact same ingredient found in nature, and we can’t wait to see this in beauty formulations soon,” commented Joshua Britton, PhD, founder and CEO of Debut. Food and textile applications are also in the works.
