European boost for ‘structural colour’ start-up
Sparxell, a start-up working on a plant-based colouring system, has announced that the European Innovation Council (EIC) has granted the Cambridge-based company €1.9 million towards scaling its technology.

The company said it had successfully run 25 pilot projects with major brands across various industries and that it had finalised scaling to tonne-level production this year in preparation for an upcoming commercial launch.

Sparxcell transforms cellulose to achieve ‘structural colour’ that is due to microscopic structures and not dyes. Spun-out of Cambridge University in 2023, it is part of LVMH’s La Maison des Startups incubator.
