Exhibition to showcase transnational research on novel materials

University of the Arts London's (UAL) Fashion, Textiles and Technology Institute (FTTI) will present an exhibition exploring research and development shaping the future of sustainable fashion from September 11 to January 30.

New Landscapes will be hosted at the British Council’s headquarters in Stratford and will showcase the outcomes of a multi-year partnership supporting small to medium enterprises (SMEs) in multiple countries.

Highlights include:

• Bequin, a bio-derived sequin with a range of embroidery applications and featured by fashion brand Ganni. This project was developed by Botto  Labs, an India-based materials development lab; The Stitch Archive, a London-based embroidery consultancy; and Indian embroidery house Vashistha Luxury Fashion

• Climate Positive Microbial Colours, a partnership between Indian-based natural dye specialistsTrueTone Ink, India-based herbal dye experts Color Ashram and UK-based bio-colour specialists Post Carbon Lab; and

• Desi-Oon Wool Traceability Framework, a partnership between India’s Centre for Pastoralism; Here We Are, a UK-based organisation, and UK brand Where Does It Come From. This partnership mapped India’s indigenous wool and supply chains to open new markets in the automotive and interiors sectors.

The project has benefitted from funding from the British Council, and from academic expertise and guidance from UAL FTTI and the National Institute of Fashion Technology, New Delhi.

Sevra Davis, director of architecture, design and fashion at British Council, said: “Over the last five years, the programme has supported collaborative teams between the UK and Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Kenya, Malaysia, Nepal, Nigeria and the Philippines to change the fashion, textiles and technology industry’s approach to finite resources and the approach to environmental and social sustainability.”
