Portugal development means PVD progress for Oerlikon
Swiss textile machinery manufacturer Oerlikon has announced that its Oerlikon Riri and Oerlikon Fineparts coated metal accessories and zips brands are to expand their use of physical vapour deposition (PVD) processes. Oerlikon acquired Riri at the end of 2022.
PVD involves applying a thin-film coating solution to components, which Oerlikon argues is a more environmentally responsible way of constructing them.
Its internal analysis has shown that the overall environmental impact of a PVD-treated stainless steel accessory is lower by 76% than an electroplating-treated brass version.
The group recently installed new PVD equipment at its factory in Fundao in Portugal. It said this would make it possible for it to produce high volumes of PVD-finished components.
