The plant-based bioplastic M49 from polymer manufacturer Mazzucchelli is used as an alternative to acetate, the plastic used in most frames.
M49 contains a high amount of plant-derived content that can be broken down by microorganisms upon disposal, said the company.
M49 is composed of cellulose acetate and a plasticiser of vegetable origin. The resulting formula is mostly composed of materials from renewable sources.
It said: “Cellulose is a natural polymer which represents the backbone of the whole plant kingdom. By reacting cellulose with acetic anhydride, cellulose acetate is obtained. Plasticisers are then added to improve its physical characteristics and workability.”
The glasses have been designed to be recyclable, so worn parts can be replaced.
