China: silk tied up with rural poverty alleviation

06/01/2022

The fruits of a Chinese east-west poverty alleviation initiative recently became evident at a sericulture facility in Chongqing’s Qianjiang district, local media have reported.

Due to being twinned with Shandong province’s Rizhao city, the district, located in south-eastern Chongqing (but potentially more than four hours away from the city proper by car), has witnessed the recruitment of more than 600 residents to the silk industry as part of a Rizhao-based project.

A sericulture base of more than 13.33 square-kilometres (20,000 Chinese mu) has been established in the Qianjiang area to house the workers, reporters in Chongqing went on to say.
