Chongqing spurs sericulture with subsidies

19/04/2022
Local administrators continue to inspire momentum within Chongqing’s sericulture industry in a bid to consolidate and expand existing poverty alleviation efforts in and around the city’s Qianjiang district, according to Chinese media reports.

The district is located over four hours away from the city proper by car.

Specifically, Qianjiang officials aim to revitalise the area’s economy by offering subsidies of ¥1,350 or around $210 per mu (a Chinese unit of measurement which roughly equates to 666.7 square metres) for newly established mulberry tree orchards, extending to the purchase of seedlings, fertiliser, mulch and more.

Silkworm farmers will separately receive various subsidies per kilogram of fresh cocoons produced annually, as well as for the construction of facilities relevant to the breeding, rearing and harvesting of silkworms for silk.

The construction of a local sericulture academy was also mentioned by local media.
