Fibre manufacturer Lenzing has launched a new competition to encourage students to come up with innovative ideas to address the environmental challenges facing the textile industry.

Undergraduate and Master’s degree students whose research focuses on fashion, the circular economy, textile recycling or the use of biobased fibres have until June 15 to submit applications for the new Young Scientist Award.

A panel of industry experts will assess the entries and Lenzing will present the winner with an award of €5,000. It will make the presentation at the Dornbirn Global Fiber Congress. The Austrian Fibers Institute is organising the congress, which will run from September 14-16, giving the winner the added benefit of networking with influential figures from the textile and fibre industry.

Lenzing board member Robert van de Kerkhof, who is currently president of the Austrian Fibers Institute, said: “Driving research and development forward and supporting young scientists in developing their ideas is a matter that is close to our heart. We are convinced that innovation and technological progress are vital to our success in tackling the pressing environmental challenges we face.”
