During the year, it achieved a 12% reduction in “specific” greenhouse gas emissions and a 10% reduction in “specific” water consumption.
In 2019, Lenzing set a target to reduce its carbon emissions by 50% by 2030 and to be net-zero by 2050. Its new plants in Brazil and Thailand, as well as 200 million investments at sites in China and Indonesia will help the company towards this goal.
It partnered Swedish pulp producer Södra and is planning to expand capacities for pulp recovery from waste textiles. The goal is to be able to recycle 25,000 tonnes of used textiles per year by 2025.
In the third quarter, it launched its first Tencel lyocell fibre made from wood- and orange-based fibre pulp, using waste from the food industry.
Board member Robert van de Kerkhof said: “Our innovations in relation to the circular economy and biodegradability stem from a deep sense of responsibility to our planet and a desire to act in ways that future generations can be proud of.”
Lenzing, which had revenues of € 2.19 billion in 2021 and employed almost 8,000, also received several awards in 2021 for its achievements.
