Carbon-fibre breakthrough for Teijin
Sports applications are among the uses that high-performance materials developer Teijin envisages for a new range of carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) products.
Teijin has announced that it will form a business alliance with Fuji Design Company, a manufacturer of high-quality recycled carbon fibres, to establish the production, supply and commercialisation of CFRP.
They have said they will use Fuji’s recycled carbon fibres and a process with a low environmental impact to create the CFRPs.
Fuji has said its fibres produce 90% fewer CO2 emissions than the manufacture of carbon fibres from virgin raw materials. It already has in operation a commercial-scale plant for making these fibres, partly subsidised by Japan’s ministry for the environment. It has been looking to expand its business by developing new applications for the technology.
For its part, Teijin has been striving to lower its own environmental impact. Along with efforts to reduce in-house energy consumption, it, too, has been developing technologies to recycle materials, including carbon fibres.
