Coats outlines ambitions in sustainability report
Thread maker Coats achieved a 22% reduction in water usage in 2021 compared with a 2018 baseline, as it works towards a 2022 targets of 40%.

To achieve this target it has a four-pronged approach: eliminating any unnecessary use of water, improving efficiency by reducing liquor ratios, modifying processes to use less water and recycling.

Some of its water reduction projects were delayed because of pandemic disruptions in 2020.

In its new Sustainability Report, it also notes 82% of effluent was compliant with ZDHC against a target of 100% by the end of 2022 and 19% of premium polyester threads were those made of recycled materials.

Group CEO Rajiv Sharma said: “I am pleased with the substantial progress we have made in 2021 towards delivering our sustainability targets.

“Our commitment to sustainability does not end when we achieve our 2022 targets. As an industry there is a long way to go and Coats has long term ambitions to ensure it will be at the leading edge of pioneering a sustainable future.”

The report also outlines how the company will reach its targets for 2030, which include a pledge that 70% of energy consumption will come from renewables and all products will be made independently of new oil-extraction materials.

By 2050, the group is aiming to be carbon neutral through water and energy reduction, shifting to more renewable energy and responsible effluent treatment as well as through its materials transition.

Coats' Innovation Hub Asia will be renamed Coats Sustainability Hub and will be repurposed to focus on the application of biomaterials.
