Coats introduces water-soluble threads
UK threadmaker Coats recently presented EcoCycle, a circularity-minded line of water-soluble threads designed to dissolve at 95 degrees Celsius in an industrial washing machine.
The idea is that washed articles may then be disassembled more speedily by simply being pulled apart before being sorted for recycling, Coats said. It highlighted the need for brands to “build in the right threads” at the very beginning of the design stage, if they are serious about helping to facilitate a circular economy.
Head of sustainability at the company, Andrew Morgan, commented: “We need to reset the basics in order to deliver supply chain circularity. Sustainable innovation turns product conception and development on its head by addressing end of life first before how to manufacture it.”
Product director for apparel and footwear, Sonya Manolova, added that Coats would now be putting the ball in the court of eco-conscious industry players to integrate the technology at the start of their creative process.
