Tagged thread from A&E can help brands combat counterfeiting

Technology provider Applied DNA, which provides DNA-based product authentication solutions for textiles, has worked with thread manufacturer American & Efird (A&E) to develop thread that will allow clothing brands to authenticate and validate their products anywhere within the supply chain.

A&E Integrity ECO 100 is the name of the line of sewing thread resulting from the project. It incorporates Applied DNA’s CertainT molecular-based technology, which allows A&E to tag the yarn it uses to make the thread, which in this case is yarn from 100% recycled fibre.

This, in turn, makes it possible for brands to verify their products or components in the field through the use of a portable PCR testing tool.

Australian designer Sara Caverley has already announced her intention to use A&E Integrity ECO 100 in a new footwear collection. She said she wanted to provide “tangible proof” of the authenticity of the materials in her products.

Commenting on the development, A&E executive vice-president, Chris Alt, said: “Our customers are hyper-aware of the detrimental effects of counterfeit products, from lost sales to the potential  loss of brand equity. It’s a real and global threat.”
