Carbios names its PET partner

03/03/2022

Biotech start-up Carbios has announced that the major producer of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) it will partner with to help it scale up its C-ZYME enzymatic recycling technology will be Indorama Ventures. Carbios claims its technology has the potential to make plastic more sustainable by breaking down used plastic and textile polymers.

Together, Indorama and Carbios will now establish a manufacturing plant for fully bio-recycled PET. The factory will be in Longlaville in the east of France and will come on stream in 2025. It will have the capacity to process 50,000 tonnes of PET waste per year and will create 150 new jobs.

Indorama has said it will consider expanding the Carbios biological recycling process to other PET factories in its global network.

Commenting on the partnership, France’s minister for the economy, finance and the recovery, Bruno Le Maire, said: “Carbios has developed a disruptive technology and process that enables efficient transformation of plastic waste into new valuable products.”

He said the government was supporting the project as part of a wider recovery plan called France 2030. “Combining biotechnology and a renewed industrial ambition will be key to achieve a more circular economy,” the minister added.
