Carbios-led PET recycling consortium grows
Members of a fibre recycling consortium led by French biotechnology start-up Carbios have voted unanimously to welcome Tommy Hilfiger and Calvin Klein owner PVH Corp into their fold.
The two-year project to prove the viability of the company’s selective enzymatic polyethylene terephthalate (PET) polyester and blended textile recycling process at an industrial scale was initially announced last July.
Other members include sports brands Patagonia, Puma, Salomon and On. Each is committed to trialling the technology on their own lines, including sportswear, footwear, underwear and apparel. They will also work towards making new products from Carbios’ “virgin-quality” recycled PET fibres. PVH’s addition now broadens the scope of feedstock for testing.
Executive vice-president for sustainable business and innovation at Tommy Hilfiger Global and PVH Europe, Esther Verburg, said signing up showed the group's “ongoing commitment to including more circular materials”.
