Rubi joins Walmart in apparel prototyping project

Rubi Laboratories, which develops cellulosics with carbon captured from production waste streams, has joined hands with retailer Walmart on a prototyping project to gauge the viability of manufacturing small quantities of “zero-waste” clothing using its patent-pending enzymatic technology.

On touring Rubi’s facility earlier this year, Walmart’s executive vice-president, Andrea Albright, described how tests were ongoing to determine how the latter’s own factories might be able to integrate Rubi technology on a larger scale. If the plans for the present piloting schemes are successful, there is potential to roll out the resulting garments in Walmart stores.

“Walmart’s ability to mobilise positive impact across its supply chain of diverse US partners could be massively impactful in scaling our production and delivering on our commitments,” said Rubi Laboratories co-founder and chief executive, Neeka Mashouf, on behalf of the start-up.
