Further expansion for Spinnova with in-house spinning plant
Finnish biomaterials developer Spinnova has announced a further development in its expansion plans.
It has secured a new site in Jyväskylä, opposite the factory it is already building to produce Woodspin.
Woodspin is a joint venture between Spinnova and Brazil-based pulp producer Suzano to make textile fibre from micro-fibrillated cellulose from wood pulp.
The partner companies have said they expect to begin installing the technology required to produce the fibres at the end of summer 2022 and for the construction project to be complete by the end of the year.
Now, however, Spinnova has decided to set up its own spinning facility directly opposite the Woodspin facility.
Construction of the in-house yarn spinning facility will start in June, and will be completed in the spring of 2023.
Spinnova said an in-house spinning facility would help it streamline the research and development processes it wants to build as it brings its renewable fibres to market. Specifically, it said the spinning facility would enable “a fast turnaround of product development projects with multiple brand partners”, offering them fibre, yarn or fabric, depending on their needs.
It has chosen Switzerland-based short-staple fibre spinning machinery developer Rieter as its main technology partner for the spinning facility project.
