Global Change Award winners announced

Five projects for improving the textile and apparel sector’s environmental impact will share prize money of €1 million as winners of the 2022 Global Change Award programme. This is an initiative that the H&M Foundation set up in 2015.

Winners this year include an initiative to improve recycling of elastane and polyester blends, a development to create “planet-positive” viscose and lyocell from CO2 emissions, and an alternative to goose down that derives from plants from regenerative agriculture projects.

The elastane-polyester project is the work of a Chinese company, Re:lastane, which uses a “mild process” to produce recyclable elastane and polyester blend fabrics.

Planet-positive viscose and lyocell from CO2 emissions is the work of US-based Rubi.

The down alternative is BioPuff, developed by UK-based Saltyco (see image).

Other winners are a laundry solution that aims to prolong garments’ life, and an artificial intelligence platform for helping smallholder cotton farmers increase yield and income.
