Plastics partner for Eastman recycling facility in France

29/09/2022

Materials developer Eastman has announced Interzero, a specialist in plastics sorting, as a partner for the molecular recycling facility it is developing in France.

Eastman announced the new facility in January. It will be located in Normandy and will aim to process approximately 160,000 tonnes of hard-to-recycle polyester waste annually. The company has said it hopes to begin operations at the plant in 2025.

Under this new partnership agreement, Intermezo, a Germany-based plastics recycler with the largest sorting capacity in Europe, will provide Eastman with up to 20,000 tonnes of hard-to-recycle polyester household packaging waste that would otherwise go for incineration.

Typically, this material will be coloured and opaque PET waste; this cannot be recycled mechanically but Eastman will use it to create, via its polyester renewal technology, transparent rPET.
