Lab work and field tests in the Pyrenees pay off for Ternua

Basque outdoor brand Ternua has said it is pleased with the combination of functionality and comfort that its research and development department has been able to apply to the Protech line of mountain apparel that forms part of its autumn-winter 2023-2024 collection.

New products in the Protech line include a jacket called Mauna Kea. This uses proprietary fabric called Shelltec Active Flex to provide high levels of water protection and breathability. Ternua describes the fabric as “extremely strong, but with a little elasticity” for comfort.

A number of products are carry-overs, including the Rakaposhi jacket that won an ISPO Award in 2021. Ternua originally developed this jacket for Japanese mountaineers Kazuya Hiraide and Kenro Nakajima and sought to take “all the technical needs of climbers and mountaineers into account”. It uses the Schoeller Aerobrane membrane to give high levels of breathability.

The Amphu jacket, which uses PrimaLoft Gold Luxe and Pertex Quantum insulation, and the Sharpu 2.0 Jacket, which uses PrimaLoft Gold Pure and Pertex Quantum, are also in the line.

Ternua has also draw attention to mountaineering trousers called Elbrus, which also form part of the Protech line, which contain fibres obtained from recycled fishing nets through a project called Redcycle.

It said high levels of work from a focus group of mountaineers, including Alberto Iñurrategi, Oriol Baró, Miriam Marco and Iker Madoz, had also gone into its preparation of the new Protech line. These experts had set guidelines for the brand on comfort and functionality following winter field tests in the Pyrenees.
