Appetite for PrimaLoft's ThermoPlume is unabating
US-based materials developer PrimaLoft, the company behind ThermoPlume, a synthetic insulation substitute for natural down, has revealed how a new “wave” of adoptions this winter season has taken the product’s customer base beyond 70 brands.
Designed to mimic some of the most attractive performance properties of goose down, such as its loft, fluidity, lightweight warmth and compressibility, the fast-drying material’s construction also means it can be blown through traditional down-blowing equipment to achieve a similarly lofted look. In this way, ThermoPlume “helps simplify the supply chain [and] combat the volatility of down prices” for apparel manufacturers, according to senior vice-president of product at PrimaLoft, Tara Maurer-Mackay.
The portfolio encompasses 100% post-consumer recycled PrimaLoft Black Insulation ThermoPlume, as well as the company’s Silver Insulation ThermoPlume with Cross Core technology and Black Insulation ThermoPlume Bio. This latter product contains proprietary, 100% recycled fibres engineered to be found more appetising by microbes that occur naturally in ocean, landfill and wastewater environments. Its synthetic fibres ultimately break down into components that are only found in nature, PrimaLoft says, such as water, carbon dioxide, methane, biomass and humus.
ThermoPlume can be found in the current autumn-winter ranges of brands including Nike, Alo Yoga, Montane, Helly Hansen, Ecoalf, Vuori and FP Movement by Free People.
