PrimaLoft down alternative now 100% recycled
New York-based performance insulation and fabric developer PrimaLoft recently launched a more green-minded version of its PrimaLoft Insulation ThermoPlume down alternative, first released in 2017.
Created from 100% post-consumer recycled material, the synthetic product is made up of small, silky fibre “plumes” which, according to the brand, collectively mimic the fluidity, hand-feel and aesthetics of down.
The material’s proven water-repellent properties contribute to a soft, compressible thermal output, “even in wet conditions”.
Senior vice president of engineering at PrimaLoft, Vanessa Mason, elaborated: “This new version’s construction allows it to be blown through traditional down-blowing manufacturing equipment, simplifying the manufacturing process for brands and giving product designers the freedom to create versatile garments that combine the look and feel of down with the water-resistant performance of a synthetic.”
More than 70 brands - including Timberland, Woolrich, Nike, Millet, Salomon and Montane - will incorporate the now-recycled loose-fill microfibre insulation in their autumn-winter 2021 collections, a press release said.
