Gold nanoparticles dry Allied’s down faster

US-based Allied Feather and Down is using Fuze Biotech’s gold nanoparticle technology for a faster-drying down insulation.

Expedry can help to keep the wearer warm, and uses less energy to dry, by using gold nanoparticles bonded to the down cluster, said the company.

These particles work to increase the evaporation rate of water at a molecular level, without the need for heat.

It claims Expedry can dry 40% to 60% faster than untreated down and creates a continually dry environment inhospitable to fungus.

Andrew Peterson, chief technology officer at Fuze Biotech, said: “Working with Allied on long-term sustainability goals allowed us to come across an interesting new area of study where we find that gold nanoparticles significantly increase the evaporation rate of water. This technology has exciting implications that extend far beyond the apparel industry.”
