New Chinese ‘down city’ on the up
Gongqingcheng, Jiangxi province, was recently confirmed as China’s city for down production at a ceremony there.
The sub-prefecture-level city, founded in 1955, is known for the farming of ducks with the production of down for clothing also contributing to its prosperity.
In 2016 Gongqingcheng began pursuing a mission to become a “fashion capital” and a city that is “famous for clothing”. Owing to the scale of this project, by 2019 it had become a key component of Jiangxi’s contribution to China’s much wider Belt and Road Initiative.
Brands currently calling the city home include Yaya, famous for its duck down coats and winter clothing.
Members of local government were among the ceremony’s attendees.
