New insulation is longer wearing, PrimaLoft says

US materials developer PrimaLoft has launched Utility, a new line of synthetic insulation it says has been engineered for ease of care and improved durability.

This has resulted in “enhanced structural integrity... exceptional abrasion and compression resistance”, according to the firm. Another key performance attribute is the partly recycled material’s ability to withstand numerous wash cycles to “maintain its peak performance”, even under high temperatures, PrimaLoft said. Its first adopters are outdoor-focused brands Grizzlyskin, based in Germany, and LL Bean in the US.

Senior vice-president of product strategy at PrimaLoft, Tara Mauer-Mackay, told how Utility enables users “to explore new realms of functionality and usefulness [for] garments that can last a lifetime, a critical aspect of sustainability that is often underdiscussed.”
