Blockchain-traceable wool in new Schoeller fabrics

Swiss textile innovations developer Schoeller Textil is combining wool from Nativa with polyamide and elastane in a collection of fabrics for outdoor apparel including softshell jackets, pants and gloves.
It has said that the wool from Nativa is sustainable and that a system that uses blockchain technology provides proof that it is also fully traceable.

Nativa, part of French group Chargeurs, sources merino wool in Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, the US, Argentina and Uruguay.

Each farmer it works with has her or his own management plan, which covers feeding, breeding, behaviour, animal handling, health and infrastructure. This includes the prohibition of mulesing, and farmers commit to stress-free shearing.

Consumers will be able to scan a QR code to view the origin of the wool in a garment from farm all the way to the apparel brand. Nativa claims to be the the first global wool brand to provide blockchain traceability in this way.

The fabrics in which Schoeller has used the traceable wool have a double-weave construction consisting of a wool-polyamide blend on the interior and a polyamide-elastane blend on the exterior. The articles are characterised by high abrasion resistance and elasticity, the Swiss company has said.
