Final phase of MDI expansion project under way at BASF site
Chemicals group BASF has broken ground on the third and final phase of a project to expand its production of methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI) at its factory in Geismar, Louisiana. It announced this phase of the project in July 2022.
When the plant reaches full capacity, it will produce around 600,000 tonnes of MDI, a key ingredient in the manufacture of polyester, per year. BASF’s aim is to complete the project in 2025; it is investing $780 million in the expansion.
Chief executive, Michael Heinz, said the investment demonstrated BASF’s commitment to meeting the needs of customers.
