Further funding for Checkerspot

Biotechnology developer Checkerspot has secured $55 million in new funding. It said it would use the money to accelerate the development and commercialisation of “high-performance, biobased alternatives to everyday products”.

Examples of developments  the California-based company has already brought to market include WNDR Alpine skis and snowboards. These use polyurethane foams and cast urethanes developed from microalgae-derived oils.

Checkerspot has also worked with Switzerland-based green chemistry company Beyond Surface Technologies to develop its biobased performance wicking finish miDori, which is in use already in clothing from Patagonia and other brands.

“Reducing global dependence on fossil fuels requires innovation and collaboration,” Checkerspot has said.
