Runners to support reforestation through ASICS initiative

Japanese athletic footwear brand ASICS has announced a new initiative to encourage people in North America, Europe, Oceania, Japan, Korea, South East Asia, Latin America and the Middle East to take part in special runs to support reforestation projects.

Events will be co-ordinated using the brand’s Runkeeper app; they will take place between April 10 and April 30.

Through a partnership with reforestation-focused non-profit One Tree Planted, ASICS has pledged to plant 25,000 trees once supporters help it reach a goal of 25,000 “challenge completions”. This will amount to one tree for every 5 kilometres app users run or walk.

“This challenge requires the support and participation of runners worldwide,” ASICS said.

Its senior general manager, Minako Yoshikawa, said the company had set out to make it easy for people around the world to take part and “make a positive change for the planet”.
