Roadmap for cotton industry in Uzbekistan

Stakeholders in the cotton industry in Uzbekistan have signed an agreement with sustainability programme Better Cotton at an event in Tashkent.

The agreement will help provide the industry in Uzbekistan with a roadmap towards sustainability developments.

Signatories included Tanzila Narbayeva, the chair of a national commission in Uzbekistan for combatting human trafficking and forced labour. The chair of the country’s textile and garment industry association, Ilkhom Khaydarov, signed too.

The roadmap will aim to build effective management systems for a programme that Better Cotton launched in Uzbekistan in 2022, and to raise awareness among cotton stakeholders in the country on “sustainability pillars”. It will promote workers’ rights and healthy working conditions.

At the event, Better Cotton’s senior programme manager, Rachel Beckett, presented the roadmap to an audience of more than 600 delegates, including representatives from business, government, civil society, international organisations and educational institutes.
