Renewable feedstock advance for plastics

19/09/2023

Chemicals group BASF has announced what it says is an important development in making plastics more renewable.

It has launched a series of biomass balance offerings for plastic additives, saying this is an industry first. Initial offerings include Irganox 1010 BMBcert and Irganox 1076 FD BMBcert. These products are certified by TÜV Nord for mass balance according to international sustainability and carbon certification ISCC PLUS.

BASF said customers choosing these additives would be offering support for the use of renewable feedstock to replace fossil feedstock in plastics, which it said would help customers meet their sustainability targets.

At the beginning of the value chain for these products, fossil-based raw material is replaced by biobased feedstock. According to BASF’s calculations, this can reduce the product’s cradle-to-gate carbon footprint by up to 60% compared to the global average.
