Bio-monoethylene glycol (BioMEG) producer UPM has completed a student design project with Central Saint Martins college in London, which is part of the University of the Arts.

UPM worked with the college to organise a competition for students of product and industrial design.

Fifty students took up the challenge set out by the competition, to reimagine a range of everyday products that can be made from renewable, circular materials. The products the students came up with went on show in mid-September at an event called Design Transforms, part of the London Design Festival 2023.

Winners included Edward Wilken for Boarderline, a snowboard design that incorporated components constructed used UPM’s BioMEG. This entry won in the ‘Business’ category.

Another winner was Oliver Valentine for Exoflex, a monomaterial, modular body protection system for motorcycle riders, aimed in particular at riders in countries with high motorcycle usage and high crash statistics. This product won in the ‘Manufacturing’ category and also picked up an award as the choice of the UPM team involved in the project.
