Plant-based nylon goes into two Polartec fabrics

Specialist technical fabric developer Polartec has begun using a plant-based nylon fibre and membrane in two products, its Power Shield and Power Stretch Pro fabrics.

It described the fibre as a renewable, non-GMO plant-based nylon with a 50% lower carbon footprint than virgin nylon 6,6.  It said the fibre, which it has called Biolon, uses between 45% and 48% plant-based raw material.

Polartec’s sustainability director, Karen Beattie, said: “We are elevating our sustainable material capabilities by exploring new fibres, adopting advanced manufacturing techniques, fostering innovation, and collaborating with partners.”
